A number of Emirati researchers will present a pioneering study on a sustainable, eco-friendly and alternative material to cement at the International Architecture Exhibition at Venice, Biennale during November 2021.  This material is inspired from the Sabkha areas (salt flats) that are widespread in UAE. This material will be made from a mixture of salts and minerals extracted from the brine resulting from the desalination process. This study was intended to help find alternative solutions to two environmental challenges. The first results from the cement manufacturing process, which in turn contributes about %8 of global carbon dioxide emissions. The second results from the disposal of highly saturated brine left over from industrial desalination of water into the oceans, which has a major impact on marine life and ecosystems.
