Piece of Charles and Diana's wedding cake sold for $3,000

A cake from Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer's 1981 wedding sold for more than $3,000 at an auction in Britain this week.

This nearly 800-gram piece of a four-decade-old marzipan cake wrapped in thick white cream and bearing the British royal emblem, sold for 1,850 pounds ($3,075), including fees and costs.

The final price of the piece is 3 times more than the price set at the beginning of the auction and ranged between 300 and 500 pounds.

Auctioneers said the candy "appears to be in the same good condition as when it was originally sold, but we advise against eating it".

The cake remained wrapped in plastic wrap inside a box that read "PLEASE HANDLE CAREFULLY" and dated July 29 1981, the wedding day.
