How to change your perception of bad situations?

The way we face difficult times can make the difference between mere suffering and utter misery. Below, Tina Gilbertson, a psychotherapist, provides some steps to keep in mind when you find yourself wishing your life was like someone else's:

First: Expand your time view, meaning whatever you face, it will not last forever. Long weekends, job interviews, and even the Coronavirus pandemic, all of this will eventually come to an end, giving way to something else. Remind yourself and make sure "That too will pass."

Second: Focus on your capabilities, what can you do? Things get worse with a complete lack of control. And in many situations, we have more capabilities than we realize. Always, do appropriate action to avoid unnecessarily despair accumulating over suffering. And you have to let things run about everything outside your sphere of influence.

Third: Reduce expectations. If you are really afraid of a coming event, assume it won't be anything fun. But when it comes, stay open to what is really going to happen. Lowering expectations means that you will not be disappointed, but you may be pleasantly surprised.

Fourth: Look at the positive side, but do not take it as a lifestyle, because it is very stressful if it is done daily, and it may keep a person from some grumbling and healthy construction. But when conditions are truly bleak, an occasional look at the positive can help lift the cloud of gloom.
