Legal amendments in the UAE

My country embarked on one of the major reforms in its legal system in years, which has resulted in amendments to family law, and other areas affecting people's daily lives.

The law, which went into effect immediately, reflects progressive measures aimed at improving the standard of living in the country and continuing to be a preferred destination for foreign direct investments and individuals from all over the world.

Amendments to existing laws and new laws seek to regulate basic personal and civil status laws, with the possibility of allowing non-Emiratis to deal with their personal affairs in accordance with the laws of their country.

The UAE embraces people from more than 200 nationalities and caters to their needs. These amendments will cover laws related to divorce and separation, how to distribute wills and property, alcohol consumption, suicide, and the protection of women.

These changes also mean that individuals can refer to the laws of their countries of origin in matters of divorce and inheritance. This means that Islamic or Sharia laws are seldom referenced in cases relating to family laws for expatriates. A number of these procedures have been discussed in the UAE for some time, and this is considered to be a milestone in the continued progress in the country's judicial system.
